Project in progress Sunday, Feb 24 2013

Mr. Bumpkin has new power tools, so we started building some items to get ourselves acquainted with said tools. We built this console/sideboard this morning and will paint it later today and tomorrow.

Curtains! Friday, Feb 1 2013

We made a trip to the Houston IKEA last weekend and among the things we bought were curtains. Still tons of things to do, but the rooms feel so comfy with the curtains up.

Don’t look now, but Monday, Jan 7 2013

it’s 8:00 and the kids have put themselves to bed. Turned off the TV, turned off the lights in the living room, and went, each to their own room. Every once in a while the routine we’ve worked into them kicks in, and they do this, and it is soooooooo nice.
I am not watching the BCS National Championchip (sp?). I just can’t bring myself to cheer for either of them. Quite frankly, I would be happiest if both teams could move the ball freely between the 35 yard lines, and niether teams kickers could actually hit the broad side of a barn. An entire game of lock down defense and bumbling idiots right at the 35 yard line.
Anyway, Erika and I are planning our Honeymoon. It’s looking more and more like a summertime trip rather than a Spring Trip at this point. There is still a chance we can pull it off, but we have so much happening this spring already. Taking hte trip would be easy, it’s everything that has to happen before then that will make it impossible, I think.
We still haven’t had anymore land fowl since the gaggle of wild turkeys wandered through a couple of weeks ago. The dogs go racing out the back door everyday and spend far too much time sniffing around and ‘hunting’. These 2 dogs whould not know what to do if they got a hold of a land fowl. Heck they would probably chase up to them, then Max would lay down, roll over and cower if anything so much as looked at him funny.
So it’s after 8 on a monday eveing, and as soon as the reports are uploaded and tested, I am going to bed. As for Erika, I don’t know. Maybe she’ll post something later.

Easter Holiday, or Summer Holiday? Thursday, Jan 3 2013

So Erika and I are trying to finalize our Honeymoon plans, 15 years on from our wedding.  Better late than never.  We are planning to go to London, and my only request is to see the home of The Arsenal.

Of course there are other requests, but we gotta get here 🙂

as for the rest of the trip, the when, the how, etc, that’s still up in the air at this point.

I am already ready to go, just need to work out the finances and the plans, etc.

One last point, we have not decided what to do with the kids.  Choices are a) send them to Pacific Northwest to stay with my parents, b) have my parental units come to Maison Du Rustre c) take them along with us d) send one kid one place the other another, e) bring one with us, and the other somewhere altogether different…so yeah…there is that to deal with too 🙂

A whole ‘nother world is about to be available to me (and the rest of the family) Thursday, Jan 3 2013

I’m going to have a lot more “hometime” on my hands very soon. A few days ago I gave notice that I will be leaving my job. Knowing that I will soon be home when my family is home (nights, weekends, HOLIDAYS!) and spending some much-needed time getting things done around the house, makes me crazy excited! The need to do/want to do projects are stacking up and I’m ready to dive in! I don’t know how long this “break” is going to last, but I’m going to make sure I enjoy every second of it! I have the most awesome husband, he knew I was in dire need of a change like this, and used his Mad Computer Nerd Skillz to create spreadsheet after spreadsheet of budgets to “prove” to me that my quitting wasn’t going to kill our finances.

So, in a few weeks, when a replacement has been hired, I’ll have the new title of CEO, Bumpkin style!

P.S. I guess this is my official “announcement” that I will soon be unemployed. Hopefully not “unemployable”, lol!

Why we bought the house Friday, Dec 21 2012

This is something that makes me happy. The girl invited a few kids over for a Christmas movie watching night. She fretted and planned, kids showed up and she’s loving it. There’s plenty of room and I love being able to let Kate do these kinds of things. Of course no one is watching the movie, they are all in the kitchen talking up and storm. Every now and then, someone posts something on Instagram. Happy!

I love me a good checklist. Wednesday, Nov 14 2012

I’m a list maker.  I don’t always accomplish everything on a list, and I’ve been known to “alter” a list a time or two.  You know, to make sure I feel all accomplished.  Like you’ve never done such a thing!  Ha!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and I work in retail, so any home inprovement projects will have to be quick, easy to do projects.  Which is pretty much how things have been going since we moved in.  The last post showed us installing some blinds. Here is a list of what we wanna do:

  • Finish installing blinds in remaining rooms, maybe the garage as well.
  • Making no-sew roman blinds for the front and back doors.  Also need to figure out how to install them, I don’t want to drill anything into the doors.
  • Install shelving in laundry room above the appliances.
  • pull out all our prints/poster/pictures we have collected over the years and search out frames to make our gallery wall in the study.

There is an ever-growing list of things we want to purchase for the house, but it’s all stuff we want, not so much need.  Okay, well, we do “need” a new big comfy sofa.

The above list is what i would like to accomplish before the year is over.  We’ll keep you in the loop and maybe remember to document the processes as they are completed.

Hey there! We are still around! Sunday, Oct 28 2012

We put up temporary paper shades when we moved in, knowing they may be up there a few months. We decided to wait until we had the cash for blinds…this is how we agreed to take on our projects. No extra debt if we can help it. We have a list of things we need/want for the house and are slowly checking them off.

We first bought a much-needed new mattress (upgraded to a king size, Holla!).

And then we bought the bed for the new mattress (Awesome!).

Today we bought blinds for the girls room and the study, since they both face the front of the house. When we first moved in, we were going to wait until we could afford to do the whole house at once and have them professionally installed. Home Depot seemed like the best place, price was good and their off the shelf sizes were what we needed.

Well, plans change, of course. We did indeed purchase blinds from home Depot, but just for the 2 rooms to start with. We will tackle the rest as we can. Another thing we changed from our initial thoughts, we decided to go with 2 1/2 in. faux wood blinds in espresso, instead of the more common white.

We’ve never installed blinds before, and the first window was QUITE the learning experience. The second window took all of 20 minutes. Key piece of info for you: Have a powerful drill. The small 1-speed drill was no match for the metal flashing lurking behind the drywall. Bill had to go buy a bigger, better drill. So that was an unexpected/unplanned for expense.

It was easier than we thought, and we hope to have the rest of the windows done within the next few weeks.

As always, here are some pictures…

What a short weekend. Sunday, Sep 9 2012

Erika and the kids took a day trip to Baton Rouge on Saturday.  They spent the day at eating well and shopping.  Meanwhile Bill spent Friday and Saturday hanging with some work buddies in Houston doing whatever it is geeks do. Today has been non stop. The whole weekend has come down to this…Erika and Bill sitting on the back porch at sunset with some adult beverages and Tiki torches lit.
Life does not get any better.  If yours is, please share some of the details.
We will be hosting a housewarming party in early October, if you want an invite then direct message erika or bill.

So dang busy Friday, Sep 7 2012

We made it through Isaac.  We are so fortunate that we didn’t have any problems, we didn’t even lose power.  The place we just moved from was not so lucky, a berm was over topped and cause much flooding and damage.  All my friends that live there are ok, but there’s a lot of work and clean-up ahead for them.

School is back in and we are faily well settled in at the new house.  In fact, My sister and law and I have started planning the various events and parties we plan on throwing.  We’ve picked a date for our official Housewarming Party/Break in the new house party!

We still love our house and can’t wait to get out and meet as many neighbors as we can!
